President Lula's speech from the perspective of linguistic variation

Resumo: Assuming that language is not a static system and heterogeneity is constitutive of discourse, the aim of this article is to discuss several types of linguistic variation which the President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, employs whilst speaking. The corpus is composed of an interview featured by Fantástico, a Brazilian program aired by Globo, a television broadcasting channel, on July 17th 2005. It is important to highlight that this paper follows the empiricalinductive method as the excerpts under analysis were obtained from an interactive situation. This study has a theoretical base grounded in concepts of Linguistic Variation as well as in principles of Conversation Analysis and Discourse Analysis. The nature of the methodology is mainly qualitative and interpretative, comprising of dialogue in a situational and social context. The texts are presented in a format to illustrate how the language was spoken, and they consequently exhibit explicit marks of verbal local planning.

The texts are presented in a format to illustrate how the language was spoken, and they consequently exhibit explicit marks of verbal local planning.Partindo-se do pressuposto de que a língua não é um sistema estático e que aheterogeneidade é constitutiva do discurso, buscamos, neste artigo, discutir as modalidadesde variação lingüística presentes nas exposições orais do Presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.Quanto à constituição do corpus, foi gravada uma entrevista transmitida no programa Fantástico,da rede Globo, no dia dezessete de julho de 2005. Vale ressaltar que este trabalho segue o métodoempírico-indutivo, considerando-se que os segmentos analisados foram obtidos em situaçãoreal de interação. O arcabouço teórico é fundamentado em conceitos da Variação Lingüísticaarticulados às formulações da Análise da Conversação e Análise do Discurso. A metodologiaapresenta-se, sobretudo, com natureza qualitativa, interpretativa, realizando-se a partir da falacontextualizada e situada (contexto situacional e social).
