Resumo: Based on the socio-discursive interactionism, the following work aims at characterizing, both linguistically and discursively, the “mythical Indian narrative” to help the teacher’s Portuguese teaching and learning practice in the classroom. For teaching genres it is important to observe the relationship between text and context considering them as cultural activities mediated by the language in a determined situation. The methodology of genre analysis is based on Bronckart´s methodological procedures that consist of analyzing the textual infra-structure, the textual mechanisms and the Indian mythical narrative genre enunciative mechanisms. Working with genre is, besides being a way of preserving part of the Brazilian culture, an interdisciplinary work as postulated by PCNs.
