Speaking differently within of Espírito Santo: through the analytical lens of linguistic beliefs and attitudes

Speakers may notice acoustic (phonetic), lexical, and syntactic differences, among others, in the speech of other individuals, or even not identify linguistic traits that are characteristic of a region of the Brazilian territory (CARLOS, 2019). That said, in light of the theoretical postulates of Bem (1938), Lambert and Lambert (1972), López Morales (1993) and Moreno Fernández (2009), this article presents as its general objective the debate on linguistic beliefs and attitudes in four localities of the countryside of the Espírito Santo. We listed the following specific objectives: (i) to identify the belief presented by the informants of the Linguistic Atlas of Brazil regarding the existence of linguistic varieties in their place of residence, and also the linguistic attitudes towards that belief. The methodology of this article employs the qualitative and quantitative approach of descriptive research, in which we follow the methodological criteria adopted by the ALiB Project, with the selection of two men and two women from each of the locations and belonging to one of the age groups (18 -50 years and 35-65 years). The results indicate the affirmation of the belief motivated by ethnic variation and negative attitudes towards the linguistic varieties of Portuguese spoken in Brazil.
