Resumo: | During graeco-roman antiquity, geography has been a knowledge of huge utility for the political concerns. By one hand, it could supply the political groups with the kind of information useful for activities such as trading, war and territorial administration. On the other hand, it also could be useful in this period as long as geographical representation could aid on the built of a political propaganda and on the built of a good public image of the politicians by associating them with the dimension of the territories under their control, as a result of a personal deed. In the present article, we presented a historical exposition of how, during the context of graeco-roman antiquity, geography attended the political demands, arguing that the relation between geographical knowledge and politics is a chronologically cross-cutting time theme and, thus, can be found under several historical contexts, fact that, we believe, must put the researchers of the History of Geography on the pursue of how this kind of relation may have happened in other historical moments. |

Por una parte, proporcionaba a la clase política el tipo de información necesaria para realizar actividades como el comercio, la guerra y la administración territorial. Por otra parte, en este período surgió otra forma de utilidad, en la medida en que la representación geográfica podría ayudar en la elaboración de una propaganda política y en la construcción de una imagen pública favorable de las personas en posiciones de poder al asociarlos con el tamaño de los territorios bajo su propio dominio, como resultado de un logro personal. En este artículo presentamos una exposición histórica de cómo, en el contexto de la antigüedad grecorromana, la geografía satisfizo estos intereses de la política, argumentando que la relación entre conocimiento geográfico y política es un tema cronológicamente transversal y, por tanto, se puede encontrar en diferentes contextos históricos, hecho que, creemos, debe movilizar a los investigadores de la Historia de la Geografía a indagar cómo pudo darse esta relación en otros momentos de la historia.Durante a antiguidade greco-romana, a geografia foi uma área de conhecimento de grande utilidade para os assuntos da política. Por um lado, ela supria a classe política com o tipo de informação útil para exercício de atividades como o comércio, a guerra e a administração territorial. Por outro lado, uma outra forma de utilidade emergiu neste período, na medida em que a representação geográfica podia auxiliar na elaboração de uma propaganda política e na construção de uma imagem pública favorável dos indivíduos em posição de poder ao associá-los à dimensão dos territórios sob o domínio deles próprios, como o resultado de um feito pessoal.
