Resumo: Defining the concept of State, at first, would be an apparently simple perspective, but it is a complex, dynamic and possibly indistinct task. When we enter the scope of Geography, the perspectives are such definition are also recurrent, since there are some fundamental concepts of this science that are intrinsically related to the dynamics of the State. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to present a succinct and preambular conceptual discussion about what is the State, what is its possible purpose in contemporaneity, as well as how the concept is approached in the field of Geographical science, especially over time, although there is also a relationship with space. Therefore, we base ourselves on bibliographical and documental research in works of Geography and other areas related to the subject. Finally, it was clear that it is not possible to define a global definition for the concept of State, whether in Geography or beyond. However, such perspectives of understanding the concept presented in this work, although different, are fundamental for the construction of a notion of State for any individual participating in a society, as well as for the development of research in Geography, requiring further developments when necessary.

Cuando nos adentramos en el ámbito de la Geografía, las perspectivas de tal definición son también recurrentes, ya que existen algunos conceptos fundamentales de esta ciencia que están intrínsecamente relacionados con la dinámica del Estado. Por tanto, el propósito de este artículo es presentar una discusión conceptual sucinta y preambular sobre qué es el Estado, cuál es su posible finalidad en la contemporaneidad, así como cómo se aborda el concepto en el campo de las ciencias geográficas, especialmente a lo largo del tiempo, aunque también hay una relación con el espacio, especialmente a lo largo del tiempo. Para ello, nos basamos en la investigación bibliográfica y documental en trabajos de geografía y otras áreas relacionadas con el tema. Finalmente, quedó claro que no es posible definir una definición global para el concepto de Estado, ya sea en Geografía o más allá. Sin embargo, tales perspectivas de comprensión del concepto presentado en este trabajo, aunque diferentes, son fundamentales para la construcción de una noción de Estado para cualquier individuo que participa en una sociedad, así como para el desarrollo de la investigación en Geografía, requiriendo mayores desarrollos cuando sea necesario.Definir o conceito de Estado, a princípio, pode parecer uma perspectiva aparentemente simples, mas é uma tarefa complexa, dinâmica e possivelmente indistinta. Quando ingressamos no âmbito da Geografia, as perspectivas de tal definição também são recorrentes, uma vez que há alguns conceitos fundamentais desta ciência que se relacionam intrinsicamente com as dinâmicas do Estado. Assim sendo, o objetivo deste artigo é apresentar uma discussão conceitual sucinta e preambular sobre o que é Estado, qual a sua possível finalidade na contemporaneidade, bem como de que forma o conceito é abordado no âmbito da ciência geográfica, principalmente no decorrer do tempo, ainda que exista também uma relação com o espaço. Para tanto, nos baseamos em pesquisas bibliográfica e documentais em obras da Geografia e de outras áreas relacionadas à temática. Por fim, ficou claro que não é possível delimitar uma definição globalizadora para o conceito de Estado, seja na Geografia ou para além dela.
