Information science and archival science: conceptual approaches

Introduction: Introduction: In this text, we have proposed a critical analysis towards the concepts of "document" and "information" in the field of Information Science and, more precisely, within its archival discipline, since they are approached by their objectives and similar processes, concerning issues of organization, representation and access to registered information. Objective: We aim at presenting and discussing these concepts, bringing them together, especially with regard to the documental and informational notion expressed via archival principles and their developments. Methodology: This investigative segment, focused on bibliographic, documentary and restrictive nature, proves to be pertinent, since Science itself operates with delimitation in order to bring about clarification as to its object; to Information and Archival Sciences, this reflection is therefore relevant, whereas the said concepts are polysemic, present in different fields of knowledge. Results: We have settled historical and theoretical elements regarding the "document" and "information" from the perspective of Information Science and its processes, interpreting them under Foucault's discourse of the statements’ materiality (and the documents). Subsequently, we have also directed this discussion to the logic of Archival Science and its principles, aiming at understanding (and questioning), finally, the characteristics taken over the archival document and information. Conclusions: We have concluded that materiality (conscriptio) is the link between information from Information Science and the one from Archival Science, which justifies the completeness of efforts in both areas in document processing. In the domain of Archival Science, allied to the document and its informational content, are the characteristics brought by the principles that support it, features that, not as a rule, are included in those from Information Science.
