Resumo: Introduction: The article proposes to carry out a bibliographic survey on the various views of social responsibility attributed to the librarian during the 20th century, when the concept started to be discussed within the scope of the American Library Association. It is understood that this discussion contributes to the development of librarianship curricula based on social responsibility.Objective: to reflect on the contributions of the discussions of social responsibility in the scope of the American Library Association for the teaching of Librarianship. Methodology: This is a review article, based on exploratory-bibliographic research, having as source the bibliographic references found in several databases. Results: Describes the different understandings about social responsibility and presents the contours that this concept was taking in the scope of Librarianship from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. Conclusions: The concept of social responsibility has the potential to develop librarianship curricula that transform the reality of students, educators and the community in which this course is inserted.

Comprende que esta discusión contribuye al desarrollo de programas de bibliotecología con responsabilidad social como uno de sus pilares. Objetivo: reflexionar sobre las contribuciones de las discusiones sobre responsabilidad social en el ámbito de la American Library Association para la enseñanza de la Biblioteconomía. Metodología: Este es un artículo de revisión, basado en investigación exploratoria bibliográfica, que tiene como fuente las referencias bibliográficas encontradas en varias bases de datos. Resultados: Describe las diferentes interpretaciones sobre la responsabilidad social y presenta los contornos que este concepto estaba tomando en el ámbito de la Bibliotecología desde principios del siglo XX hasta nuestros días. Conclusiones: El concepto de responsabilidad social tiene el potencial de desarrollar currículos de bibliotecología que transformen la realidad de los estudiantes, educadores y la comunidad en la que se inserta este curso.Introdução: O artigo propõe realizar um levantamento bibliográfico sobre as diversas visões de responsabilidade social atribuídas ao bibliotecário no decorrer do século XX, momento em que o conceito passou a ser discutido no âmbito da American Library Association. Entende-se que essa discussão contribui para que se possa elaborar currículos de Biblioteconomia tendo como um de seus pilares a responsabilidade social. Objetivo: refletir acerca das contribuições das discussões da responsabilidade social no âmbito da American Library Association para o ensino de Biblioteconomia. Metodologia: Trata-se de um artigo de revisão, pautado em pesquisa exploratória-bibliográfica, tendo como fonte as referências bibliográficas encontradas em diversas bases de dados. Resultados: Descreve os diversos entendimentos acerca de responsabilidade social e apresenta os contornos que esse conceito foi tomando no âmbito da Biblioteconomia do início do século XX aos dias atuais.
