Descriptive cataloging: a need for review of its theoretical-conceptual bases?

Introduction: In Information Science and Library Science, one of its disciplines, Descriptive Cataloging, is going through an important moment of reflection, a (re) dimensioning of its identity, and relying on the collaboration of professionals from related areas, in a process of inter and transdisciplinary. Considering Descriptive Cataloging as one of the pillars for documentary representation and linked to the current technological context, we seek to reflect on how the concepts and theoretical and applied bases of Descriptive Cataloging can and should be rethought, to strengthen the theoreticalepistemological framework for new discussions and joint research, from the investigation of the theses and dissertations on the topic Descriptive Cataloging defended in the Postgraduate Programs in Information Science (PPGCIs), in Brazil. Objective: The objectives of this study are: a) to identify the concept of Descriptive Cataloging in the research developed; b) identify the bibliography used in each work; c) identify the institutions that house the research; and d) propose the unification of the concept. Methodology: Systematic Literature Review was adopted as a research method, which provided the mapping of scientific output, the discussion and the development of a theoretical corpus, which allowed the unification of the Descriptive Cataloging concept. Results: Forty-eight master's dissertations and sixteen doctoral theses were identified that address Descriptive Cataloging and its potential and emerging themes related to the current technological context. The results show the mapping of the concepts used in the domain of Descriptive Cataloging; the institutions that produced the academic-scientific works, the bibliography used to support the epistemological conception of the theme and the proposal to unify the concept. Conclusions: The knowledge map built on Descriptive Cataloging reveals that the theme has been approached timidly since the creation of the first Postgraduate Programs in Information Science. Thus, there is a path to be taken so that the studies in Descriptive Cataloging developed in the Postgraduate Programs in Information Science are more visible and effectively occupy their place on the agenda of academic and scientific discussions regarding the production of knowledge in this domain, in the Brazilian Information Science panorama.
