Resumo: After the Second World War, the literature in general suffered from the repercussions of war, which notes the modes of feeling and thinking the world on the verge of death and loneliness. These themes become central in the work of two contemporary writers, who work as human relations as a way to explain the post-war world. The scope of this work is the analysis of some short stories of Maria Judite de Carvalho - Portuguese writer - compared with tales of Brazilian Lygia Fagundes Telles, an author already established and whose works were awarded and are widely studied in the country. The stories were selected from works Tanta gente, Mariana, first book of Maria Judite de Carvalho, published in Portugal in 1959, and Antes do Baile Verde, from Lygia Fagundes Telles, whose stories were written between 1949 and 1969. Given that the authors have some points of contact (the fact of being female, to write in English and to do so in closely time period), this research is, firstly, to establish the connection between various literatures (the Portuguese and Brazilian) and, secondly, by focusing on the comparative study between the two works. From the selection of stories that are the subject of death and human loneliness, was made an individual analysis of each one and then the comparison, to verify how both writers deal with the psychology of its characters, especially the question of death and loneliness. The theoretical contribution used for this study of comparative literature is focused on the work of comparative literature by Sandra Nitrini, Tânia Carvalhal, Laurent Jenny and other scholars of comparative literature. The existential theory and studies on death, written by Edgar Morin, were also used as a theoretical contribution. About modernity and its effects on literature, the studies from Marshall Berman and Gore Vidal, and other related matter addressed. Thus, this work is expected to show that the study of comparative literature becomes necessary not only to check sources and influences, but to understand some motivations of human behavior in situations that are similar, meaning that the literature is a social construct and deals with themes such as death and loneliness.
