Jung’s notion of individuation and the education

The article presents some of the reflections produced by Carl Gustav Jung with regard to the relationship between the individual and society, and verifies the contributions he brings to better understand our time and the processes of formation and human development. This polarity is of fundamental importance in the understanding of ourselves and of our should-be, especially since we tend normally to one or the other extreme of tension. Today, according to his diagnosis, the tendency of identification with some collective function predominates, withering the development and personal improvement. Thus, it is important, primarily, to adjust and identify with a social role offered by the community in which we participate; and education contributes to this ideal of adjustment and compliance. The challenge, therefore, is the integration between the internal world and the external world, with the development of the person from the communion between its various aspects, including its shadows. It is the individuation process, through which there is an approximation with the archetypal ideal of the Self. Therefore, it is not a question of neglecting social development, but of associating with it the appeal that comes from singularity, integrating the two requirements into a higher whole.
