Resumo: The aim of this text is to compare Othello, by Shakespeare, to a Brazilian adaptation of this tragedy produced for young people. We intend to focus on racial aspects related to the protagonists of the books, something we think the teacher must consider together with the work of the original text. In order to follow this purpose, a theoretical approach precedes our considerations. This approach, by the way, considers three different topics: points of view about the use of literary adaptations at school, the representation of marginalized groups in scholar textbooks, and the recommendations of the PCNs – Temas Transversais towards the approach of cultural plurality by the teacher.

Nosso objetivo é oferecer ao professor algumas sugestões, a fim de que possa explorar a questão étnico-racial que envolve o personagem central deste texto em sala de aula. Apontamos, inclusive, para a importância de se realizar um cotejo da adaptação em questão com a peça escrita por Shakespeare, e de se explorar o conhecimento de mundo apresentado pelos estudantes como mecanismos que certamente enriquecerão a abordagem realizada. Tendo em vista o propósito revelado, fazemos uma análise sintética do texto adaptado, bem como tecemos algumas considerações que seguem a fundamentação teórica do texto, esta divida em três momentos. Inicialmente, apresentamos um breve panorama sobre as adaptações literárias, enfocando o modo como se dá sua aceitação para uso nas escolas; em seguida, uma seção versa sobre a representação de grupos étnico-raciais minoritários no livro didático; finalmente, discorremos sobre o posicionamento do PCNs – Temas Transversais (uma diretriz nacional para o Ensino Básico) sobre a pluralidade cultural.
