The pragmatic theory of observation: feyerabendian ontological incommensurability

Resumo: This article discusses the concept of theoretical incommensurability in the philosophy of science, focusing on the ontological perspective proposed by Paul Feyerabend. The aim is to present a comprehensive analysis of Feyerabend's proposal, highlighting the unfeasibility of explanation and reduction in general or non-instantiable theories. Feyerabend argues that Nagel's reduction theories and Hempel and Oppenheim's explanation theories are at odds with current scientific activity and acceptable empiricism. The author maintains that the transition between theories occurs not only through conceptual annexation but also involves linguistic, theoretical, and ontological changes. The replacement of one theory by another can alter the correspondence of meanings between terms and the scientist's worldview. However, the theory of incommensurability faces criticism, especially regarding linguistic and theoretical aspects, neglecting its ontological significance. This article examines both the theoretical-linguistic criticisms and incommensurability and proposes a broader defense of the ontological relationship between scientific theories.

Nosso propósito central reside em oferecer uma análise da proposição feyerabendiana, destacando a inviabilidade de explicações e reduções em teorias de caráter geral ou não diretamente aplicáveis. Feyerabend sustenta a tese de que tanto as teorias de redução de Nagel quanto o modelo explicativo desenvolvido por Hempel e Oppenheim não encontram consonância com as práticas científicas contemporâneas nem com um entendimento empiricamente justificável. O autor argumenta que a transição de uma teoria para outra transcende a mera adoção de conceitos suplementares, englobando transformações de ordem linguística, teórica e ontológica. A substituição de uma estrutura teórica por outra pode acarretar modificações significativas na correspondência de significados entre os termos utilizados e na configuração geral do paradigma científico do pesquisador. No entanto, é pertinente observar que a teoria da incomensurabilidade enfrenta críticas consideráveis, especialmente no que tange aos aspectos linguísticos e teóricos, muitas vezes relegando a segundo plano sua dimensão ontológica.
