Resumo: The aim of this work is to verify how 35 Brazilian University Language students consume the official history of their own country. They were requested to tell (30´ to 60´) what they knew about the history of Brazil. This research is based on Wertsch (1998), who tried to define the representative figures in the history of their country, according to the American University students. The criteria to analyze the narratives was "the construction of characters". These criteria consisted of three other sub-criteria, namely, the frequency of the characters´ mention, the pattern of agency superordinate and subordinate and the pattern of postulated presence. For the Brazilian students, Brazil history is constructed around a character (or group of characters) that is not Brazilian, but the Portuguese, and also, the globalization, the richer nations, etc. All the texts were rooted in the theme "unconformity with the unfair exploration of our country since its discovery"
