Resumo: The aim of this work was evaluating the agronomical and chemical characteristics of 20 different genotypes of maize used as silage. A complete randomized experimental design was used, with three replicates per treatment. Each hybrid was harvested when plants reached 1/3 of milk line stage, using two cut heights: immediately above the senescent leaves (whole-plant) and immediately below ear attachment (half-plant), and all hybrids were ensiled in PVC silos. After 50 days of ensiling, DM, CP, EE, ADF, NDF, ash and estimated TDN were determined. DM for all hybrids ranged from 26.56% to 32.19% for whole-plant silage, and from 29.53 to 36.08 for half-plant silage. CP values varied widely among hybrids, ranging from 5.80% to 8.00% in the whole-plant group and from 6.91% to 8.88 in half-plant group. On the basis of DM yield, CP and TDN, one should recommend hybrids GARRA e P30R07 to be used as whole-plant silage in the region under study
