Association between BMI and VO2 max of females in the initial stages of puberty

Resumo: To analyze the relationship between BMI and VO2 max of females in the initial stages of puberty. The sample consisted of 47 girls (stage 1 = 20 and stage 2 = 27) from the city of Apucarana, Paraná, Brasil. The Tanner (1962) method was used to identify the sexual maturation stages of the girls, the weight/ height2 relation to calculate the BMI, and the Leger (1988) 20m indirect test to measure the VO2 max. The data was analyzed by Student t test and Pearson moment correlations, with alpha level of p < 0,05. Only for girls in stage 2 the relationship was significant (r= -0,41 / p < 0,05) between BMI and VO2 max. For girls in Tanner stage 2, the onset of puberty possibly promoted structural changes that modified significantly the body composition and consequently influenced the values of VO2 max.

A amostra foi composta de 47 meninas (estágio 1 = 20 e estágio 2 = 27) da cidade de Apucarana-Pr. Para identificação do estágio de maturação sexual foi utilizado o método proposto por Tanner (1962); para calcular o IMC utilizou-se a equação peso/estaturaSup>2, e a mensuração do VO2 máx. foi realizada utilizando-se o teste de 20m de Leger (1988). Para análise estatística utilizou-se o teste “t” student e a correlação de Pearson, com nível alpha de 0,05. Os resultados demonstraram que somente para as meninas no estágio 2 a correlação foi significativa (r= -0,41 / p < 0,05) entre o IMC e VO2 máx.
