FOR OTHER NARRATIVES OF INDEPENDENCE: the life of Maria Felipa through Brazilian Cordel literature - experiences in History teaching at Professora Anésia State School (Belém-PA, 2022)

The year of 2022 was marked by the bicentennial celebrations of Brazil’s independence. This event motivated us to rethink the narratives brought forth by textbooks. Instead of a traditional narrative that prioritizes political facts, we need an approach to independence that takes ethnic-racial issues into account. In this sense, this article presents an experience report on the teaching of History at an 8th grade class at the Professora Anésia State School, in Belém - Pará, Brazil. To teach the content pertaining the Independence of Brazil, we used the Cordel literature about the life of Maria Felipa, produced by Jarid Arraes. Maria Felipa was a black woman who participated in the wars against the Portuguese in the state of Bahia, leading her people in the struggle for independence. The approach to Felipa's life allowed students to establish connections between the past and present struggles and challenges of the black population.
