This article sought to expand the discussions on the issue of land in the province of Amazonas, by unraveling aspects that characterized its dispute in a privileged area of ​​the city of Manaus, in the last quarter of the 19th century. Anchored in the tradition of Agrarian History and Social History of Properties, we lay bare the clash between the Tax Attorney of the Treasury of the Farm in Amazonas and an important trader in that square, who became a defendant after starting the construction of a property on a land considered nationally owned. More than demarcating the unfolding of the episodes, we list aspects that scrutinized the different conceptions about property rights, the interpretation of legal norms raised by the parties and the established weight, within the defended jurisprudence, of the legitimate titles that should guarantee and consecrate the property.
