Resumo: The theme of this study arose from the reading of the electoral advertisements of the candidates for the post of mayor of the city of Cáceres-MT, for the 2013-2016 term. Considering the analysis of the dispute of meanings in the electoral advertisements between candidates, through which a political-party relationship is established between candidate and people, we seek to examine the Semantic Domain of Determination of the words candidate and people in Portuguese language dictionaries, observing the relation of meanings between what these words designate in the texts of dictionaries and in the texts of political-electoral advertisements, taking the political according to Guimarães (2002, p. 16), in which it should be treated "as the foundation of social relations, in which language has central importance.
