Resumo: The twentieth anniversary of the Brasília Peace Agreement, which solved the border conflict between Ecuador and Peru, motivates renewed reflection on the framework of peaceful resolution in South America. This article intends to discuss the potential of presidential diplomacy, based on the disclosure of particular events of the book “Diários da Presidência”, by ex-president Fernando Henrique Cardoso. This discussion gives prominence to the presidential perspective of this historical moment and contextualises its stages and challenges, in order to offer new elements on the role played by Brazil as guarantor to the successful negotiations of peace.
