Complementary schools: a new school model for teacher training in the region of Contestado (1928-1938)

Resumo: Complementary Schools existed in early decades of Republican Brazil in order to train teachers for rural and multi-graded schools. This article presents results from a research on the creation of Complementary Schools in the border towns Porto União (SC) and União da Vitória (PR). The towns form a single urban set, but they belong to different States. They were born from the former Porto União da Vitória (Paraná State, Brazil)), divided with the agreement called Acordo de Limites (1916) at the end of the Contestado war. The railroad tracks that linked São Paulo to the Rio Grande do Sul delimit the interstate border. This investigation was delimited between 1928 and 1938, when both towns decided invest in training teachers for the first years, by the creation of the two schools for egresses from the school groups. Primary sources from the two institutions were used in this research, preserved in local school archives; news published in newspapers; public archives of Paraná and Santa Catarina were consulted, among others. The research allowed understand the social-educational organization of both towns, the role played by the Complementary Schools in young women and boys, the construction of representations on the training for teaching, and the belonging to the mother country, the two states and the municipalities.   Keywords: Multi-graded rural schools. Este artículo presenta resultados de investigación acerca de la creación de Escuelas Complementares en las ciudades fronterizas de Porto União (SC) y União da Vitória (PR). Las ciudades forman un único conjunto urbano, pero pertenecen a Estados diferentes. Nascieron de la antigua Porto União da Vitória (PR), dividida con el llamado Acordo de Limites (1916) al fin de la Guerra del Contestado. Los carriles del ferrocarril que ligaba São Paulo al Rio Grande do Sul demarcan la frontera interestatal. Esta investigación fue delimitada entre 1928 y 1938, cuando las dos ciudades decidieron invertir en la formación de profesores para los primeros años, creando y manteniendo las dos escuelas para egresos de los grupos escolares. En esta investigación fueron utilizadas fuentes primarias de las dos instituciones, conservadas en archivos escolares locales; noticias publicadas en periódicos; fueron consultados archivos públicos de Paraná y de Santa Catarina, entre otros. La investigación ha permitido comprender la organización socio-educacional en las dos ciudades, el role que jugaron las Escuelas Complementares en la formación de jóvenes mujeres y hombres, la construcción de representaciones sobre la formación para el magisterio, la pertenencia a patria, a los dos estados y los municipios.   Palabras clave: Escuelas rurales multiserias. As cidades formam um único conjunto urbano, mas pertencem a Estados diferentes. Nasceram da antiga Porto União da Vitória (PR), dividida com o Acordo de Limites (1916) ao fim da Guerra do Contestado. Os trilhos da ferrovia que ligava São Paulo ao Rio Grande do Sul demarcam a fronteira interestadual. Esta investigação foi delimitada entre 1928 e 1938, quando ambas as municipalidades decidiram investir na formação de professores primários, criando e mantendo as duas escolas para egressos dos grupos escolares. Nesta pesquisa foram utilizadas fontes primárias das duas instituições, preservadas em arquivos escolares locais; notícias publicadas em periódicos; foram consultados arquivos públicos do Paraná e de Santa Catarina, entre outros. A pesquisa permitiu compreender a organização socioeducacional nas cidades, o papel das Escolas Complementares na formação de jovens moças e rapazes, a construção de representações sobre a formação para o magistério, o pertencimento à pátria, aos dois estados e aos municípios.   Palavras-chave: Escolas rurais multisseriadas.
