Memory and narrative in the historical research of “samba journalists”

Resumo: With a theoretical-methodological approach, this article aims to explore the intersection of memory and narrative in a study on the history of the press and samba. These are important notions: biographical illusion, lived/remembered/narrated history, document/ monument, traditional/historicized memory. After conceptual discussion, I contextualize the involvement of journalists and intellectuals in the legitimization and formatting of samba, acting as “sentinels of tradition”. Finally, I apply these arguments to a specific case of source criticism related to the Império Serrano samba school and indicate possible developments. The text is the result of reflections in the context of thesis research on the relationship between journalists and samba composers from the 1930s to the 1970s in Rio de Janeiro.

São noções importantes: ilusão biográfica, história vivida/recordada/narrada, tempo/narrativa, documento/monumento, memória tradicional/historicizada. Após debate conceitual, contextualizo a implicação de jornalistas e intelectuais como mediadores que ajudaram na legitimação e formatação do samba, agindo como “sentinelas da tradição”. Por fim, aplico tais formulações a um caso específico de fonte relacionada à escola de samba Império Serrano e indico possíveis desdobramentos.
