Resumo: Female representation in Brazilian politics is a topic of current relevance and this study investigates explanatory variables to understand the underrepresentation of women in candidates for councilor in the 2008, 2012 and 2016 elections in 5,108 municipalities in Brazil with up to 50,000 voters. The data originate from the data repository of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), treated by the Territorial Studies Group (GETE/UEPG) and Network Analysis Laboratory (LAR/UFPR). The results show that the data are consistent and contribute to the debate on the complexity of electoral determinants and on the challenges that gender relations impose for development and contemporary democracy.

The results show that the data are consistent and contribute to the debate on the complexity of electoral determinants and on the challenges that gender relations impose for development and contemporary democracy.Este artigo analisa a sub­representação das mulheres nas candidaturas ao cargo de vereador nas eleições de 2008, 2012 e 2016, em 5.108 municípios do Brasil com até 50.000 eleitores; e discute os seus impactos para a democracia no país. Os dados de 913.133 candidaturas,resultados eleitorais, prestação de contas e eleitorado, com origem no Portal de Dados Abertos do Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE), foram tratados no Laboratório de Análise de Redes (LAR/UFPR) para extração de relatórios de estatística descritiva, análise logística, testes de correlação e regressão linear. Os resultados demonstram que a inaptidão inicial das candidaturas femininas está associada a menor disponibilidade de recursos, à escolaridade reduzida e à escassa experiência eleitoral. Entre as candidaturas aptas, incumbência,ocupações especializadas e financiamento eleitoral são variáveis que influenciam o desempenho e o sucesso eleitoral.
