The lonely voice and the subjective turn

The term "character journalism" is a concept in formation. It dialogues with the tradition of "profiles," but at the same time houses a set of other textual genres, complementary or overlapping, whose nature calls for sociological as well as editorial investigation. It is phenomenological. Among these genres, "testimonials" stand out, translating the imperative of personal experience as the measure of all things. As a secondary genre, it develops with increasingly sophisticated editing protocols - like the one explored in the work of journalist and Nobel Prize winner Svetlana Aleksiévitch. Among the instruments of analysis is the so-called "subjective turn" - a tendency to overemphasize the individual point of view, affirming it as the best, if not the only, element of legitimate contact with reality - increasingly liquid and resistant to the great meta-reports. It is understood here that the appropriation of the character is, above all, a folk communicational strategy.
