Samba: from the social margin to national identity

Resumo: The union between Europeans and Africans modeled a samba-body of unique characteristics impregnated in the Brazilian imagination. The idea is to prove that samba, a product marginalized by the elites, has become a symbol of Brazilianness, a national identity. At first, brief historical, social and political contexts are traced from the 1910s to the 1940s in relation to the history and evolution of samba in Brazil. In a second moment, we bring the construction of the body through samba. Cultural studies theory was used as a basis for historical investigation. This study was carried out through socio-historical analyzes in articles and books, which would allow the interpretation of the representations built around the passage of the meaning of samba, its music and popular dance for a representation of Brazilian culture. Este estudio se realizó a través de análisis sociohistóricos en artículos y libros, lo que permitiría la interpretación de las representaciones construidas en torno al paso del significado de la samba, su música y baile popular para una representación de la cultura brasileña. Num primeiro momento são traçados breves contextos históricos, sociais e políticos das décadas de 1910 a 1940 em relação a história e evolução do samba no Brasil. Num segundo momento trazemos a construção do corpo pelo samba. A teoria dos estudos culturais foi usada como base para a investigação histórica. Tal estudo foi realizado através de análises sócio-históricas em artigos e livros, que possibilitassem a interpretação das representações construídas em torno da passagem do significado do samba, de sua música e dança de cunho popular para uma representação da cultura brasileira.
