This essay aims to defend the need for Social Work to incorporate the theoretical foundation based on the social determination of health, for the analysis of the health crisis imposed by Covid-19. This theoretical framework is based on the understanding that the health debate is directly related to the processes triggered by the development of capitalist society, which creates diseases and spreads them unevenly, based on the socio-historical formation of each country. In Brazil, a country forged on the basis of immense social, political and economic inequalities, the pandemic brings alarming contours, reinforced by the policy to combat the pandemic adopted by the current government. A critical analysis of the pandemic in Brazil, anchored in the social determination of health, is imperative for Social Work in defending the professional ethical-political project and health reform.
