Resumo: This research was motivated by the disappearance and decline of many carnival associations in São Luis do Maranhão, a phenomenon later perceived inland and in neighboring capitals. This article examines the cultural dynamics of these groups in the cities of Belém and Teresina, under a comparative and relational historical perspective which involves elements such as influence and cultural resistance, creation, dissemination and adaptation of festive models; the contribution of tourism, manipulation of cultural identities, sociopolitical organization of the associations and actions of public institutions of culture.
