Resumo: Cantoria is the art that expresses itself mostly through sung and improvised words accompanied by the playing of the viola. Through the power of their voices, its protagonists move the poetic tradition that still finds in the Brazilian Northeast its most significant representatives. Tracing back the memory of some of them, one can find in the narrative of the singers and listeners the belief that being a cantador is a gift, therefore an important category for the comprehension of the symbolic universe that surrounds the poetic ways of the cantoria de viola.
