Cem anos de socialização no refeitório do Colégio Pedro II (1837-1937): um estudo sobre práticas sociais e alimentação

The article presents reflections on food as a social practice during the first century of Colégio Pedro II (1837-1937), an important educational institution in Brazil. Understanding food in its complexity requires an exploratory exercise involving various knowledge fields such as history, anthropology, sociology, communication, nutrition, psychology with structure the understanding of this phenomenon. Considering this interdisciplinarity approach, the aim of this research is to comprehend how the school, as a space of socialization, mediates the eating practices of young students. To do so, we utilize primary sources from the institution, such as regulations and interl rules, as well as the document Memória Histórica do Colégio de Pedro II [Historical Memory of the College of Pedro II], by Escragnolle Doria (1997). We employ the concept of representations to study the texts, viewing them as discourses and practices in the social world that make them intelligible and possible. We identify that the social relations established around food may have contributed to maintaining order, discipline, power structure, and reinforcement of internal social hierarchy witn Colégio Pedro II over the years, while also differentiating the students of this school from others.
