Resumo: This article aims to define the “place of birth” of D. Vasco de Mascarenhas – the first Count of Óbidos – with the purpose of understand the role of the Family in the social oligarchy of Portugal’s first greatness families and to identify the possibilities of ascending to a nobleman. To do so, it will be made an analysis of the choices taken by Mascarenhas in the first years of services rendered by this personage to the kingdoms of Portugal and Spain with the intention of thinking about the role played by him for the sucess of his own career and also the importance of his trajectory of services to the portuguese monarchy in the time of the Filipes and the beginning of the war Restoration.
