Resumo: The present work intends to describe the personality of a teacher from the beginning of the XIX Century who transgressed the traditional forms of being with the other in the “School of First Letters” in South America. The article is structured in three parts. The first part analyzes the concept of the foreigner and its possible relation with the first letters school of the XIX Century. The second part attempts to describe the form with which Simón Rodríguez offered hospitality to the foreigner in the school of Chuquisaca. Finally, we try to think of the possible relation between the concept of childhood, as described by Walter Kohan in his book Childhood, politics and thought, and the concepts of foreigner and hospitality in the thought of Simón Rodríguez.

O artigo está estruturado em três partes. A primeira delas destina-se à análise do conceito de estrangeiro e sua possível relação com a instituição escolar das primeiras letras do século XIX. A segunda parte procura descrever a forma com que Simón Rodríguez oferece a hospitalidade ao estrangeiro, na escola de Chuquisaca. Por fim, tentaremos pensar a possível relação entre o conceito de infância, cunhado por Walter Kohan no livro Infância, política e pensamento, e os conceitos de estrangeiro e hospitalidade presentes no pensamento de Simón Rodríguez.El presente trabajo se propone describir la figura de un maestro de principios del siglo XIX que transgredió las formas tradicionales de relacionarse con el otro en la escuela de primeras letras en América del Sur. El escrito se encuentra estructurado en tres partes. La primera de ellas consiste en un análisis del concepto de extranjero y su posible relación con la institución escolar de primeras letras del siglo XIX. La segunda parte intenta describir la forma en que Simón Rodríguez brinda hospitalidad al extranjero, en la escuela de Chuquisaca. Para finalizar pensaremos la posible relación entre el concepto de infancia, propuesto por Walter Kohan en Infancia, política y pensamiento y los conceptos de extranjero y hospitalidad en el pensamiento de Simón Rodríguez.
