Resumo: In Brazilian Portuguese (BP), the verb haver ‘to exist/there to be’can be replaced by the possessive ter ‘to have’ in existential constructions and an intriguing aspect of this variation is that ter loses the definiteness restrictions on complements while haver triggers such restriction. The assumption is that this contrast is due to the fact that, although ter has been reanalyzed as existential, it keeps the selection properties of possessive sentences. The data analyzed (1528 existential clauses from spoken contemporary BP and 200 with haver/ter-possessive clauses in MP, from the 13th to the 16th century) reveal a crucial aspect of the relevant changes in the history of Portuguese: the existential version of ter and haver inherits syntacticsemantic aspects of their possessive version, which shows that an item can emerge into a new context without changing its essential selection properties.

Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro2012-06-19info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionartigos de linguísticaartigos de linguísticaapplication/pdfhttps://www.e-publicacoes.uerj.br/matraga/article/view/22629Matraga - Revista do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras da UERJ; v. 19 n. 30 (2012): Linguagem e ensino - problematização e diálogoMATRAGA - Journal published by the Graduate Program in Letters at Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ); Vol. 19 No. 30 (2012): Language and its Teaching - questions and opportunities for dialogue2446-69051414-7165reponame:Matraga (Online)instname:Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ)instacron:UERJporhttps://www.e-publicacoes.uerj.br/matraga/article/view/22629/16172Callou, DinahAvelar, Juanitoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2019-07-09T04:04:37Zoai:ojs.www.e-publicacoes.uerj.br:article/22629Revistahttps://www.e-publicacoes.uerj.br/index.php/matragaPUBhttps://www.e-publicacoes.uerj.br/index.php/matraga/oai||letrasmatraga@uerj.br2446-69051414-7165opendoar:2019-07-09T04:04:37Matraga (Online) - Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ)false
