IMPORTANCE AND PERMANENCE OF SAUSSURE'S IDEAS

Resumo: This article seeks to present a summary of Saussure´s trajectory as a linguist, as well as a synthesis of his theoretical work. It also seeks to briefly touch upon his dichotomies in order to stimulate a close reading of his Course of General Linguistics, as a seminal reading for linguistic studies. Finally the article attempts to establish a relationship between Sassure´s work and a number of contemporary theoretical ideas, with a view to demonstrating the need to stress the importance of Saussure´s ideas as a basis for the contemporary linguist´s development.
