Resumo: This paper aims to discuss some of the theoretical-critical questions bearing on the literature produced by Afro-descendants in Brazil. A selection of views are presented on what the literary production of black or Afro-Brazilian authorship would consist of. We here highlight the approaches of Bernd (1988), Cuti (2010) and Duarte (2008; 2014). The discussion of canon formation also stands out due to the process of silencing and exclusion against minorities imposed by legitimizing instances. It is concluded that the notion elaborated by Duarte of “Afro-Brazilian literature” is the most adequate to encompass such literary production since, besides being broader than the so-called “black” and “Black-Brazilian” literatures, for example, it rests on five foundations: theme, authorship, point of view, language and the reading public.
