This thesis aims to analyse the academic career of Mauricio de Almeida Abreu by investigating his work, his teaching practice and his institutional involvement, based on the contributions of Santos (1978, 1988 and 1996), Harvey (1980), Lepetit (2001) and others who contributed to the analysis of his works. Formed in the parameters of the classical Geography, from the neo-positivist and Marxist studies until the current phase of this science, Abreu experienced its main stages, presenting works related to all of them. In its last phase, he chose to follow the tracks of the Historical Geography, offering contributions to the analysis of the relation of space and time and its materialization in the space, promoting the recognition and dissemination of this field of Geography in Brazil. His work, mostly of empirical approach, had the city of Rio de Janeiro as its focus, bringing back the memory of the city, paying special attention to the beginning of the process of occupation and appropriation of the territory in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Abreu promoted the approach of Geography with History, bringing different methodologies, which are usually practiced in the context of historical research, such as the analysis of documents preserved in memory institutions
