The main objective of this work is to analyze how the ideational grammatical metaphor contributes to the production of arguments in newspaper editorials, more precisely in those published in Folha de S. Paulo, Jornal do Brasil, in the Estado de S. Paulo and in Globo. Such analysis is anchored in the theoretical assumptions of Systemic-Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1985, 1989, 2004, 2009; HALLIDAY & MATTHIESSEN, 2004, 2006, 2014; MARTIN & ROSE, 2012; TAVERNIERS, 2003, THOMPSON, 2004), with an emphasis on ideational meta-function and in some resources of Corpus Linguistics (SARDINHA, 2004). Due to this theoretical apparatus, the methodology adopted is part of the bibliographic research, with literature review of the works cited. It is understood that the editorials are conceived as documents located in a historical-social period, framing the thesis in the documentary research. It is noteworthy that the approach adopted is of quali-quantitative nature, in a junction between a more subjective analysis combined with a quantitative one, with a percentage of the occurrences of the phenomenon. It is added that the research is of descriptive-interpretative nature, that is, it explores and explains in order to elucidate the object of analysis. The research proved the hypothesis that the grammatical metaphor is a powerful argumentative resource, which allows the indication of value judgment, objectification, non-negotiation of meaning, the activation of shared knowledge and the erasure of the actor's figure, give the construction airs of absolute truth. The analysis of such exclusion of the participants was described by the representation of the social actors (VAN LEEUWEN, 2008). In short, the ideational grammatical metaphor was conceived in the present thesis as a relevant argumentative resource, with a view to providing opportunities and highlighting the newspaper's discourse
