This dissertation presents an ethnography of the lived futures and the make a living between artists of peripheral and favela origin, mostly black, involved in the circuit of marginal poetry and slam poetry in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. I present an alternative interpretation to the so-called boom in artistic-cultural practices arising from the peripheries and favela of Brazilian cities in recent decades, focusing the analysis no longer on the notion of lutas, but departing from the corre, an emic description of a contemporary engagement with the world urban. I analyze it following the unfolding of practical categories around the forms of daily construction of futures, such as artista, dinheiro da passagem, calote, trocados, ajudas de custo, cachês, trampos, gastações, responsas, curas e militância, and overcoming difficulties to move throughout the city, “to be seen and heard” and “recognized”. I follow the ordinary processes that lead to the routinization of slam competitions, turning to the lasting temporal and creative work of the everyday practices of my interlocutors and interlocutors, beyond the situations of poetry declamation. Throughout the chapters, I analyze elaborations on what is a life worth living, the daily transits in the city between the train and metro wagons, art and formal jobs, the "poetic interventions", the "running slams”, the production of cultural events and the ways to cope with the fare money dilemma to access transportation infrastructure, find gigs, earn money, acquire social worth, deal with life uncertainties and to make ends meet. Through the ethnography of the relations between artistic practices and multiple moneys, I argue that artists’ practices show incessant negotiations around the legitimacy of art as an alternative of make a living and a job, multiple, ambivalent, and contradictory value regimes of relations, persons, in addition to lived temporalities and coped materialities. Focusing on the everyday life of art as a form of living, this dissertation shows artists as urban dwellers who are also part of the heterogeneity of urban peripheries and favelas, whose complex ways of living and inhabiting the city on the corre can bring us elements to reflect on aspects of the poor and black people’s lives of those who live through daily gain.
