Manifestações de violência no cotidiano de mulheres cadeirantes: um olhar inovador para a Enfermagem

The subject matter of this study deals with the manifestation of violence in the everyday-life of women in a wheelchair. When it is turned back to People with Disabilities (PWD), it is necessary to consider a segregating society, which values the beauty and is undergoing a process of transformation in order to accept diversity. It is understood that social structures that make people vulnerable, isolation, prejudice and rights violation increase the vulnerability of this group and may cause situations of violence. Violence against women with disabilities is part of a bigger problem that involves violence against PWD since it correlates socio-cultural factors with gender inequality. From the challenge of uncovering the relationship from women with their own disabilities, with the wheelchair, which brings with itself an important symbolic arsenal, with and their perceptions about the daily violence, the participants of this study were restricted to women with physical disability and in wheelchairs. The relevance and the particularities of the violence against women in wheelchairs defined the overall aim: to discuss the violence that women in wheelchairs live in their everyday-lives. The specific goals are: to describe the perspectives of the woman in a wheelchair about her own condition; to analyze the situations of violence lived by the woman in a wheelchair in her everyday-life. Thus it was developed a descriptive and exploratory research with qualitative approach, where the so-called Story-Life method was chosen, a methodology from Daniel Bertaux that considers the views of the selected participants in-depth. In order to collect the data, thirteen interviews were conducted in scenarios that attended the PWD. In order to find other participants, the snowball sampling technique was used. From this process two analytical categories emerged: the condition of being woman and wheelchair user: necessities and possibilities and the everyday violence lived by the woman in a wheelchair . These categories contemplate our overall and specific goals. In conclusion, it was verified that these women s understanding of the manifestation of violence revealed aspects that are part of their everyday-life, which wouldn t be primarily considered situations of violence, but situations that involve the relationship woman-disability, the awareness of a new body and its connection with a wheelchair. Problems about the gender stood out, which would be even more complex for women with disabilities, especially the ones related to sexuality/motherhood. About the perceptions of the situations of violence emerged domestic, interpersonal and sexual manifestations. However, the institutional violence and the ones related with the health care preponderated. A big part of the discovered manifestations are related somehow to the psychological nature of violence. The reported stigmatizing situations exposed revealing episodes about the behavior of an excluding sociery that reacts against the differences. Knowing the process of construction of a violence situation could mean a fundamental means for the formation of bonds and a future dialogical relationship with the health care providers, especially nurses. Nursing and its practices bring different kinds of knowledge together that can be the beginning of the closing of the existing gap in the health assistance to these women regarding to violence.
