This research aims to analyze the work of the social worker in student assistance at public universities, with the search field to the Superintendência Geral de Políticas Estudantis da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (SuperEst/UFRJ). Therefore, this research analyzes the work process in which are inscribed the social workers of student assistance, with emphasis on the debate on the increasing rationalization of professional work that has been submitted in the context of counterreform of Higher Education. In terms of methodology is an exploratory study, based on a review of the theoretical production on the investigated phenomenon, in documentary research to official data, institutional documents that regulate the student assistance and instruments and systematization produced by the multidisciplinary team, as well as carrying out semi-structured interviews with the team of social workers of student assistance, in order to identify the contradictions that run through the student assistance actions, the seizure of cases of the demands presented by the students, the way professionals delimit their object of work and systematization of processes and evaluation of the work. The main results include the break with the historical trajectory of the professional to the social worker, marked today by the primacy of socio-economic analysis at the expense of the student tracking, and the gap between the axes in the program and implementation of student assistance actions at the university.
