A água na cidade do Crato - CE: uma contribuição para o planejamento e gestão dos recursos hídricos em áreas urbanas

The aim of this work is to diagnose the behavior and use of the water in the city of Crato, Ceará, an area located in the northeast semi-arid. Two main factors are considered in the diagnosis: (1) the disordered urban expansion of the referred City, which occurred along of Grangeiro River, and (2) the irregular inhabitation in slopes that have been occurred since the XVIII century. The used methodology approaches the water circulation in both the City as a whole and each quarter individually. The methodology includes fieldwork, a historical review of the urban evolution and the up rise of primary data through interviews. The history of the urban evolution of the city of Crato's quarters is directly related to the presence of water. The City was born at the borders of the Grangeiro River, which crosses the City. The Grangeiro River intervenes in the urban social life, some times as a resource and other times as source of danger. The historical review has also shown that the unplanned urbanization produces the inhabitation of areas which are in the border of water resources, as well as the occupation of slopes and natural thalwegs. In this work, it is analyzed an presented some characteristics of the city of Crato and its quarters: population, the supply of drinking water and the destination of the sewages. Through the fieldwork it was found out that the city of Crato does not have a sanitary sewage system that cover all the urban area and that avoid the pollution of the natural water resources. The fieldwork has also shown that there are erosion problems in the borders of the Grangeiro River as well as the occurrence of floods.
