Resumo: The hereditary Princes’ education is one of the concerns of countries that adopt the monarchy as a government regime. In the 19th century, this topic was one of the Emperor D. Pedro II’s biggest concerns as well, aiming to train his daughters in order to transform them into two women capable of assuming, in due time, the constitutional government of the Brazilian Empire. This research has as object of study the formal education of Princesses Isabel and Leopoldina. The problem consists in investigating, from the lesson notebooks of the two girls, which were the teaching contents of the Humanities area that D. Pedro II judged as necessary for the formation of the Brazilian Throne heirs’, occurred in the Imperial Palace of São Cristóvão and Petrópolis, between the years 1850 and 1864. Therefore, the present study has the general objective of analyzing what the Princesses Isabel and Leopoldina studied, in order to understand how education for the nation government was conducted, because Isabel, as the first in the line of succession, needed to be able to take control of the country, as well as Leopoldina, in the absence of her sister. Among the specific objectives, we highlight to examine the notebooks of the Princesses, deposited in the personal file of the Imperial Family in order to understand traces of the educational trajectory of their authors, and to interpret the teaching contents of the Humanities area considered most important, according to the hierarchy of the study time, volume of subjects and frequency of studying such knowledge. The theoretical framework consists of writings by authors who study the process of “manufacturing” a sovereign in the Court Society, and researchers who focus on the study of notebooks in their intrinsic and extrinsic aspects. This qualitative and historical-documentary research’s main source is the notebooks of the daughters of D. Pedro II, from the personal archives of the Imperial Family of Brazil. The research's contribution is in the identification and analysis of the study documents of the Princesses, written from childhood to adolescence, configuring an expressive sample of what was taught in Imperial Brazil. From this relevant documentation of the History of Education, it was possible to know the curriculum and the teaching and learning practices adopted by brazilian and foreign masters who acted not only in the formation of the heirs of the Throne, but also in the instruction of other students of the Brazilian Court, in the middle of the 19th century. The analysis of the lesson notebooks revealed that the father-master D. Pedro II, from the adolescence of the Princesses, had the central purpose of forming two women educated to govern, prioritizing teachings focused on the humanities, sciences, languages and, above all, political economy, by further guidance and advice on how to govern well.

Submitted by Bianca CEH/A (bianca.silveira@uerj.br) on 2021-10-08T21:02:31Z No. of bitstreams: 2 Tese - Jaqueline Vieira de Aguiar - 2020 - Completa.pdf: 12461838 bytes, checksum: 4b17d1f8aac97cb73a022c5fa5bddc3c (MD5) license_rdf: 0 bytes, checksum: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2021-10-08T21:02:31Z (GMT). description The hereditary Princes’ education is one of the concerns of countries that adopt the monarchy as a government regime.
