Resumo: | The theme of this work is the construction of the diagnosis of bipolar disorder in a Facebook group (online community), investigating, through a virtual ethnography, the meanings and agencies that the members of this network are producing around the bipolarity. These forums show the construction of a new place for the lay public front to medical knowledge, which has been taking shape since the mid-twentieth century with the expansion of activism promoted by the patients themselves. The internet plays a key role here, by providing new channels and flows for the divulgation of scientific knowledge. In line with the increasing penetration of psychiatric references in culture, bipolar disorder has been spreading through these means and participating in how many people interpret and experience their emotional swings. Considering this context, ethnography made in the Facebook group aimed to investigate the impact of this diagnosis in how people understand themselves, the tones that participants give to how they speak of the disorder, treatments and ways of managing bipolarity approached by them, the voices of authority elected to speak on the subject, the conceptions of nature/causes of the disorder that predominate in this social network, etc. To answer these questions, the 10 most commented publications of the group in one month period were analyzed and, based on the different themes identified, some conclusions were drawn: most publications brings painful experiences reports, placing bipolarity as an obstacle to be circumvented; endorsement and mutual identification by the diagnosis are common in the group, stimulating fellowship relations; drugs are the prime resource in the treatment of the disorder, which is seen as something incurable but subject to regulation; cultivating positive thoughts and attitudes are some of the strategies used to circumvent the difficult stages of the disease, showing a pragmatic approach to deal with the psychological distress, which is associated to post-modern values; bipolarity is defined as an entity outside the subject, of which he would be carrying. This last point relates to the biological concepts that has spread since the publication of the DSM III (1980) and transformed bipolar disorder in a neurochemical materiality, dissociated from personality. |

Submitted by Boris Flegr (boris@uerj.br) on 2020-07-05T16:08:47Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Luisa Motta Correa.pdf: 1493985 bytes, checksum: 312bf9e5c927d0115ed8d160e9ee628e (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2020-07-05T16:08:47Z (GMT).
