This dissertation aims to analyze the National Family Expenditure Study (ENDEF), a survey produced by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), which carried out a survey of the situation of Brazilian families in the 1970s, during the Civil-Military Dictatorship. For this, we briefly go through the use of statistical methods throughout history and how their insertion in Brazil took place, their relationship with the creation of the IBGE, their use for setting up economic planning and with the formulation of the National Security Doctrine. In addition, we present the stages of elaboration of the ENDEF, from the creation of the Social Indicators Group, through the entire production and execution process, until arriving at the detailed reports made by the field agents about the social reality of the country. Finally, we focus on the first works carried out with ENDEF data and its preliminary results, we also debate the reasons that led to the extinction of the group responsible for handling the information raised by the researchers, and we will discuss the reasons for the non-disclosure of their definitive data.
