Resumo: | Studying the flux of energy and matter using the ecosystem paradigm is one of the main subjects in stream ecology. A variety of concepts and approaches were developed with this perspective, with considerable improvements for ecological theory. The carbon budget (C budget) is one of the main approaches used. The Spiraling concept, in turn, gives essential ideas of longitudinal connectivity of elements in transformation through the system. Despite being forged long time ago and look promising still these days, the organic carbon spiraling (SOC) approach is barely used by stream ecologists. Beyond the essential conceptualization for the understanding of ecosystem structure and function, SOC uses some of the operational variables used in C budget. Yet, studies using both approaches at the same time are rare. The present thesis had as tis objective to elucidate the processes of ecosystem carbon fluxes through the river continuum using both approaches, analyze its connection in terms of metrics, and describe the main predictors of generated results. Therefore, campaigns were performed between Jun/13 and Apr/16 in five points of Córrego da Andorinha stream, Ilha Grande, RJ, a short tropical stream of the Atlantic coast with high longitudinal connectivity. Temporal variation in the allochthonous input was observed, with higher input rates in the "rainy season", related to extreme events. Input rates through the continuum varied according to riparian zone structure of the stretch. Total organic carbon (OC) export was higher in higher discharge (Q) stretches, and higher discharge months, but not in "rainy season" months. The relation between input and export (I/O) of coarse OC regulates processes of accumulation or subtraction, which seem to change prevalence according hydrological factors ruled in large space-time scale. SOC calculations returned a Gaussian mode curve for the headwater-mouth gradient, with higher spiraling length in the middle-course, and lower in the headwaters and stream mouth. Hydrological factors regulated OC transported (TOC) concentrations of dissolved and fine carbon, which were the main loads of C in SOC calculation. TOC concentration through the continuum reversed during a flood, which exported in 8h the expected amount for a month in basal conditions. In the perspective of climate change impact on ecosystem function, C flux processes seems to be altered mainly in function of changes in "rain" and "dry" patterns. Uma diversidade de conceitos e abordagens nessa perspectiva foi desenvolvida, com considerável avanço para teoria ecológica. O balanço de carbono (C budget) é uma das principais abordagens utilizadas. O conceito de espiral (spiraling), por sua vez, traz ideias essenciais de conectividade longitudinal de elementos em transformação através do sistema. Apesar de ter sido proposta a longo tempo a abordagem de espiral do carbono orgânico (SOC) é pouco utilizada por ecólogos de riachos. Além de ser essencial para o entendimento da estrutura e funcionamento do ecossistema lótico, SOC emprega algumas das variáveis operacionais utilizadas em estudos de C budget. Apesar disso, são raros os estudos que se utilizam das duas abordagens. A presente tese teve como objetivo elucidar processos ecossistêmicos de fluxo de carbono ao longo do contínuo de rio através das duas abordagens, analisar sua interconexão em termos de métricas, e descrever os principais preditores de resultados gerados. Para isso, foram feitas campanhas entre Jun/13 e Abr/16 em cinco pontos do Córrego da Andorinha, Ilha Grande, RJ, um riacho curto de alta conectividade longitudinal. Foi observada uma variação temporal de aporte alóctone, com maiores taxas ocorrendo na estação chuvosa , relacionada a eventos extremos mais prováveis de ocorrerem nessa estação. As taxas de aporte ao longo do contínuo variaram de acordo com a estrutura da zona ripária no trecho. A exportação total de carbono orgânico (OC) foi maior nos trechos de maior vazão, e nos meses de maior vazão, mas não nos meses da estação chuvosa . A relação entre aporte e exportação de OC grosseiro (I/O) regulou processos de acumulação ou subtração, que parecem trocar a predominância de acordo com fatores hidrológicos regulados em larga escala espaço-temporal. Cálculos de SOC resultaram em um padrão de curva gaussiana no gradiente nascente-foz, com maior comprimento de espiral no médio-curso, e menor na nascente e na foz. Fatores hidrológicos regularam concentrações de OC transportado (TOC) fino e dissolvido, principais cargas de C no cálculo de SOC. Concentrações de TOC ao longo do contínuo se inverteram em evento de cheia, que exportou em 8h o montante esperado para um mês em situação basal. Em se tratando do impacto das mudanças climáticas no funcionamento de ecossistemas, processos de fluxo de C tendem a se alterar principalmente em função de mudanças no padrão de chuvas e secas.
