Impacto do Tratamento Restaurador Atraumático nos parâmetros de saúde oral: estudo longitudinal de 24 meses

The Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) is a restorative procedure based on concepts of minimal intervention dentistry and partial removal of carious lesion leading fewer endodontic treatment in primary and permanent dentition, and higher population access, since it can be developed in underserved communities with great cost beneficial. This study investigated the impact of ART in oral health status of schoolchildren 6-14 years old and compared the results of the ART performed in a clinical environment with non-clinical environment (school and rural) over 24 months. The results of this epidemiological investigation indicated that a reduction in caries of 4.3 teeth with carious lesions to 0.01 in clinical and 4.4 teeth with carious lesion to 0.1 in the non-clinical environment, including attendance at school and rural community. The visible plaque index and gingival bleeding obtained in school 6-14 years in clinical, school and rural environments reduced significantly over the reviews of 0,6,12,18 and 24 months (p <0.01). In addition, the ART survival rate in primary one surface restorations was 96% at 12 months and remained stable over the 24 months of follow-up. In permanent teeth, in one surface cavities, the survival rate was 97.4% and 81.7% respectively at 12 and 24 months. When multiple surfaces were involved, this rate dropped to 79.5% and 80% respectively in the primary dentition and permanent after 24 months. TRA associated to health education, showed over 24 months, effective in the control of dental caries and gingival inflammation in clinical and non-clinical environment. It constitutes an excellent alternative for health promotion strategies and prevention of oral diseases in public health, especially in underserved communities
