This study is focused on the analysis of the technical and administrative personnel in education who occupy the position of administrative assistant at the Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA), as well as the impacts of this activity over the health and in the way of living of such professionals. The theoretical and methodological reference for the development of the current study is based on the principles of dialectical historical materialism, implying the understanding of the subject as a social and historical being who intervenes in the reality in which it is inserted and suffers the determinations of this reality. This paradigm seeks to overcome the appearance of the phenomenon, understanding the mediations which determine it. Concepts of the psychodynamics of work are also prioritized and articulated in the theoretical foundation. A great number of technicians with underused potential have been studied in the present organizational context and from an analysis of fifty questionnaires and twenty one semi-structured interviews. Such professionals have always been put aside the decision making processes, working as mere support for academic activities, experiencing, therefore, feelings of invisibility and low status. The bureaucratic model of organization to which they are submitted to generates frustrations when imposing the execution of activities that are predominantly routine, prescribed, and tied to rules which often prevent them from resorting to alternatives to perform a more responsive and effective public service. It notes that this scenario creates a fertile ground for the emergence of defensive strategies, of pathogenic suffering and, possibly, less commitment and mobilization. It also questions the superficial analyses that do not identify the complexity of this tangle of feelings and behaviors that have probably been raised by the difficulties that permeate the everyday work of the administrative assistant. It points out the need to deconstruct the idea that all accommodation comes from workers trickery and bad faith, inferring that inertia and apathy can be signs of psychic disorder or even a disease process which is the result of an organizational dynamics that allows the professional an anonymity place. It warns about the importance of creating workplaces for the administrative assistant that favor the following: appreciation, participation and negotiation in order to provide opportunity for the work activity to be an end itself and becoming a significant activity for the subject, for the university and for the society. Finally it concludes that the work can take meanings of growth, utility, coherence and achievement and it can, perhaps, lend its meaning to all the suffering that has been experienced when facing the adversities greatly present in the workplace.
