The Strategy of Family Health (SHF) has been created as the main initiative for the reorganization of the assistance model in SUS. At the same period of time, the Brazilian population became aged. The professionals of HF attending this population contingent are submitted to the influence of technical, institutional and cultural aspects as its fragile training, the absence of an effective system of care, and the low social value given to the aged citizen in the society. This study is focused in the attention to the elderly, in the context of the Strategy of Health of the Family (SHF) in the State of Rio de Janeiro using a qualitative methodology. The main objective is to unveil the context of the attention to the elderly in the Strategy of Health of the Family (SHF) in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Its specific objectives are to know the professionals perception concerning the aging process and its consequences related to the attention to the elderly in ESF; to discuss the paper of ESF in a net of attention to the elderly, analyzing the organization of the health system and; to analyze the work process in the attention to the elderly. The individual interview, the focal group and the documental analysis are the techniques of data collection utilized. Fifty-four individual interviews and six focal groups were accomplished for the Flux Descriptor s creation and the Discussions of Cases. Six teams of professionals participated, in 3 municipal districts of the State of Rio de Janeiro. In relation to the role of SFH, technical contents, abilities and attitudes need to be developed with professionals as a whole, particularly among the doctors. The need of an articulated net of attention to the elderly was emphasized; the integration of different services and levels of attention and the intersectorial work allows a care practice and the promotion of a healthy aging. The professional education and practices need to be understood in an integrated way, particularly to the doctors. Those contents are important to be inserted in graduation and post-graduation courses. The training of the teams that are already in course should be worked attending the premises of the permanent education. An articulated and resolute assistance net for the aged is needed. In order to develop the competences for the professionals of health in the SHF is necessary to develop the competence of the system of health first. Without this, it will not be any significant result in order to improve the quality of Care.
