Resumo: Through the visual references that make up the devil's figures in the 2017 Acadêmicos do Salgueiro samba school parade, which presented the plot The Divine Comedy of Carnival, this study focus on the layers of interpretation of the demonic figure by the italian writer Dante Alighieri, author of the Divine Comedy, by the french artist Gustave Doré, main illustrator of this literary work, and the carnival creators Renato Lage and Márcia Lage, responsible for creating the parade. Based on the dynamics of popular culture, we outline the transformations that took place in the figure of the devil based on the perspective of these artists and the range of influences condensed in the carnivalesque visuality of the respective parade.
