Entre a conscientização e a cooperação nos comportamentos pró- ambientais: a conservação da água como um dilema social

The behavioral decision-making process in situations that involves environment conservation implies social dilemmas. The choice between acting for the collective (cooperate) or giving preference to private benefits (defect) involves many variables that participate on this individual choice. Starting with household water use, the present study is characterized by a descriptive and exploratory research that evaluated the participation of pro-environmental beliefs and knowledges in promoting pro-environmental behaviors. Through a survey with 59 multiple choice questions about beliefs and behaviors linked to household water conservation use, compared the answers of people who worked and/or studied on the environmental field (n=158) were compared with those who did not worked or studied in this field (n=180), all of them living in the city of Rio de Janeiro. These instruments were also used to carry out another data analysis, comparing, now the answers of people who directly pay individually for water use (group A; n=121) and people who have shared water bill or do not pay for its use (group B; n=217). It was found that, besides the environmentalists group presented significantly statistic differences more pro-environmental in beliefs than the other group, this distinction doesn´t existed in regard to behaviors. Besides that, it was found that in group A, it has been a significantly bigger difference than group B about the frequency in pro- environmental behaviors of household water. One conclusion is that the phenomenon characterizes a social dilemma, in which beliefs and behaviors do not seem to maintain strong correspondence. Based on this research, it´s imperative to have a local/institutional management aiming at diffuses the problem of social dilemmas and promoting the individual cooperation in the benefit of society and the environment
