Resumo: | Morphological awareness is the ability to reflect and manipulate the morphemic structure of the words. In recent decades there has been an increased interest in studies focused on morphological awareness since previous results have indicated that this ability helps in the acquisition of word reading and the comprehension of texts. However, most of these studies were conducted in English, a language with several orthographic inconsistencies. It is possible that the contribution of morphology does not be the same in languages with more regular orthography. This thesis aimed to investigate the role of morphological awareness on reading comprehension in a language with a high degree of consistency between graphemes and phonemes, Spanish. The total sample of this study was composed of 228 children between the ages of 8 and 11, enrolled in the 4th year of elementary school, and attending 4 different public schools in Mexico City. Three dimensions of morphological awareness were evaluated: awareness of the morphological structure, morphological decoding, morphological analysis, and its contribution to reading comprehension was verified, controlling phonological awareness, non-verbal intelligence, vocabulary. Mediation with the reading of words was also evaluated. The results of this study point out that the awareness of the morphological structure presents a direct and significant contribution with the reading comprehension, additionally two paths of contribution mediated by reading words and vocabulary were statistically significant, finally two paths of contribution, one mediated by the morphological analysis and decoding were not statistically significant. |

A consciência morfológica é definida como a habilidade de refletir e manipular a estrutura morfêmica das palavras. No entanto, a maioria das pesquisas têm sido realizadas em língua inglesa, a qual possui grande inconsistência ortográfica. É possível que em línguas com regularidade ortográfica não se encontre o mesmo efeito da contribuição da morfologia. O objetivo da presente tese foi investigar o papel da habilidade de refletir sobre os morfemas e a consciência morfológica em uma língua com alto grau de consistência entre grafemas e fonemas, o espanhol. A amostra total deste estudo foi composta por 228 crianças matriculadas no 4º ano do ensino fundamental em escolas públicas da Cidade do México, em uma faixa etária entre 8 e 11 anos. A partir disso, avaliou-se a consciência morfológica por meio de três dimensões: consciência da estrutura morfológica; decodificação morfológica; e análise morfológica, correlacionando-as com a leitura e compreensão de palavras. Adicionalmente, verificou-se sua contribuição para compreensão de leitura controlando a consciência fonológica e inteligência não verbal, por meio da mediação da leitura de palavras e do vocabulário. Os resultados deste estudo apontam que a consciência da estrutura morfológica apresenta uma contribuição direta e significativa para a compreensão da leitura. A leitura de palavras e o vocabulário mediaram a relação entre a consciência morfológica e a compreensão da leitura. Já a relação entre a consciência morfológica e a compreensão da leitura não foi mediada pela análise morfológica nem pela decodificação morfológica.
