Prevalência de HPV em adolescentes virgens e com atividade sexual

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a DNA virus with high prevalence worldwide. It is the single most common STD in the world. There are few data on prevalence among adolescents not sexually active and there are many taboos in this age group. The aim of this study is to identify the prevalence of HPV by molecular biology in patients without first sexual intercourse compared with a group of patients of similar age with sexual activity. We evaluated 100 adolescents aged 11-20 years with at least two years post-menarche, attended from January 2007 to January 2009 at the gynecology outpatient clinic for children and pubertal at the University Hospital Pedro Ernesto. Among the 100 adolescents, 50 had intact hymen and 50 reported regular sexual activity. For patients without first sexual intercourse (group 1) we collected material from vestibule only and for patients with sexual activity (group 2) we collected material from vagina and endocervix. The search for HPV DNA was performed by 2nd generation hybrid capture. The results were reported in relative light units. For the categorical data we applied Fisher's exact test. The overall positivity of HPV DNA of high and low risk was 72%. In group 1 test was positive in 3 cases (6%). In the second group, 33 cases (66%) were positive for at least one site. Material from vagina were positive in 30 cases (60%) and cervix in 27 cases (54%). We can conclude that the positivity in girls with sexual activity is high. HPV infection, although rare, may occur in girls without sexual intercourse.
